What this exam is
AB-100 is Microsoft's expert-tier certification for architects of agentic AI business solutions — multi-agent systems built with Microsoft Copilot Studio, Microsoft Foundry, Azure AI services, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform, wired together with open protocols including Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent2Agent (A2A). The audience profile is a working solution architect: someone who decides when to extend Microsoft 365 Copilot versus build a custom agent, designs the governance and ALM around agent fleets, and can defend an ROI analysis for the whole thing.
It is the first Microsoft certification whose subject is agentic architecture itself rather than a single product — and one of the first architect-level AI certifications from any vendor.
The number that should shape your studying
Deploy is 40–45% of the exam. Candidates hear "architect exam" and study design patterns; nearly half of AB-100 sits after the design is done — monitoring and telemetry, testing strategy for agents, application lifecycle management for models and Copilot Studio artifacts, and the responsible-AI, security and governance surface: prompt-manipulation defenses, data residency, access controls on grounding data, audit trails. If your study plan weights domains evenly, you have under-weighted the largest domain on the exam.
The prerequisite ladder
AB-100 alone does not award the certification: you need one active associate-level certification from Microsoft's list of 15. For most engineers coming from the AI side rather than the Dynamics side, the natural on-ramps are AI-103 (Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate) or AB-620 (AI Agent Builder Associate). If your associate cert has lapsed, renew it first — the prerequisite must be active.
What Microsoft has and hasn't published
Published: the full skills outline (dated July 22, 2026, with a change log), the passing score, the prerequisite list, and a free official practice assessment. Not published: a fixed question count or duration for the live exam, and — unusually — no self-paced Microsoft Learn learning paths exist for this certification yet. An instructor-led course (AB-100T00) is the only official training named. That gap is why independent, blueprint-faithful practice matters more here than for a mature exam code: the documentation you study from is the product documentation itself, and the skill being tested is judgment across it.
